I've always had really dry skin. My skin gets especially dry in the winter time. Skin products never seem to work so I found some healthy food ideas that are know to nourish the skin.
Avocados are a great source of vitamins C, E, and monounsaturated fats, which help your skin lock in moisture.
People who ate 5 tablespoons of tomato paste daily, along with almost a tablespoon of olive oil for 12 weeks, had 33% more protection from sunburn compared to a control group that ate just olive oil
In a study published in the Journal of Nutrition in 2011, people who drank a beverage containing green tea polyphenols daily for 12 weeks had skin that was more elastic and smooth, and had one-quarter less sun damage when exposed to UV light compared to a control group.
Researchers from the University of Arizona looked at people who reported that they ate citrus fruits, juices, and peels weekly. People who ate peels (orange peel or lemon zest, for example) had a 33% decreased risk for squamous cell carcinoma.
Dr. Oz has given me some additional ideas on how to handle dry skin this Winter. Here are some ideas that I found on his website
1) Shower Strategically
Instead of taking a hot shower for a half hour, try using warm water for a maximum of 10 minutes. You’ll minimize the dryness that happens when scalding water sucks the moisture out of your skin. Bonus tip: Blot your skin dry – rather than rubbing – with a towel and apply moisturizer immediately.
2)Use a Humidifier
Certain heat systems including central heat, wood burning stoves, fireplaces and space heaters can blast away all the moisture in your home’s air. The result can be painful, irritated skin or a sore throat. Use a humidifier in your bedroom or living room to combat dry air.
3) Exfoliate Expertly
Part of a good skin care regimen is exfoliation, the removal of the outermost layer of dead cells on your skin. Types include mechanical exfoliation, which uses a physical abrasive to dislodge and remove dead skin cells, and chemical exfoliation, wherein glycolic acids help to detach dead cells. An effective routine will leave your skin glowing and healthy.
